Offense, pitching lead Palo Alto 13s to Babe Ruth victory


Zachary Donaker and Griffin Zajac combined to throw a three-hitter and the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-stars put together plenty of offense to beat North Solano, 17-2, on Sunday in the Babe Ruth state tournament at McKelvey Park in Mountain View.

Matthew Caren doubled, singled and drove in three runs for Palo Alto, which plays again Monday at 4 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.

Donaker went the first four innings of the five-inning affair to gain credit for the victory. He allowed one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts. Zajac needed just four pitches to finish the game.

Zajac also had three hits and drove in two runs while Dylan Donnelly drove in a pair. Zander Darby added three hits, scored three times and recorded a RBI, while Jonah Elisofon had a pair of hits.

William Pires scored three hits and drove in a run. Stephen Lee and Adar Schwarzbach each added a RBI to the cause.

Palo Alto scored three times in the first to take control right away. Caren drove in the first run. He later doubled home two runs in the third to put the 13s up, 5-1.
