East Palo Alto police have arrested a man for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman on Feb. 4, according to a police department press release.
Officers responded to a call at 1:12 a.m. in the area of Embarcadero and Greer roads in Palo Alto to investigate a kidnapping and sexual assault that had occurred in East Palo Alto that night.
The victim said she was walking home when a man offered her a ride and she accepted it. She noticed that the man was not driving in the direction of her home and she asked him to let her out of the car, East Palo Alto police said.
The man allegedly refused to let her out of the vehicle and drove to an unknown location in East Palo Alto where he sexually assaulted her until she was eventually able to escape from the car. The victim underwent a sexual-assault examination, and DNA from an unknown person was recovered, police said.
Investigators entered the DNA into the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), and police found a match on a possible suspect. The victim later positively identified the man, police said. East Palo Alto detectives secured a $1 million arrest warrant for him.
Detectives conducting surveillance on Friday, July 1, at about 8:30 a.m. took the suspect, Victor Marquez, 21, of East Palo Alto, into custody without incident. He was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility for sexual assault and kidnapping.
