Neushul, Steffens lead USA women to gold in Kunshan Cup

 

The USA women's senior national team claimed gold at the Kunshan Cup, beating Australia, 7-5, in Saturday's final. Stanford grad Kiley Neushul scored four goals to lead the offense while Cardinal senior Maggie Steffens was named MVP.

Team USA (22-2) competes in the FINA World League Super Final, starting Tuesday in Shanghai.

The Americans opened a 3-2 advantage after the first quarter and made it 6-4 at halftime. Australia blanked Team USA in the third quarter while adding a goal of their own to make it 6-5 with just eight minutes to play. In the fourth quarter the United States turned the tables blanking Australia 1-0 en route to the 7-5 victory.

The United States went 4-of-9 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty while Australia went 2-of-8 on power plays and 1of-1 on penalty shots.

The U.S. earned second place at the KIDS' Final following a 12-5 loss to Hungary in Saturday's final. scored three goals to pace the Team USA attacked while Cal Meyer and Adrian Weinberg teamed up in combined for 13 saves.

Menlo School sophomore Sam Untrecht and his Stanford water polo club teammate Gabe Discipulo, of Aptos, played for the U.S.

The Americans opened a series of exhibitions in Bucharest, Romania with a 9-7 victory over Montenegro on Friday.
