Team USA reaches FINA Intercontinental gold medal match unbeaten

Stanford grad Bret Bonanni scored three times and the USA men's national water polo team completed preliminary play at the FINA Intercontinental Tournament undefeated, beating winless China, 19-2, Saturday in Yokohama, Japan.

Team USA, who matched the tournament's largest margin of victory, meets Australia on Sunday for the gold medal.

"We're just going to focus on the things we need to work on, defensively and offensively. Yes, maybe we'll do some of the same things as in the first match against them, but maybe we can change some things," USA assistant Jack Kocur said. "We'll look to be consistently pushing the tempo, not playing to their speed. Everything is about focus; focus on the ball, focus on spacing, and focus on body awareness, which is something we've been concentrating on the past few months."

Cardinal grads Tony Azevedo and Alex Bowen each added a goal for the Americans, who were 5-of-8 on power plays and converted their lone penalty shot.
