Stanford drops pair of beach volleyball matche

The Stanford beach volleyball team finished its regular season on Thursday, dropping 4-1 decisions against San Jose State and Santa Clara at the Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium.

"We would have liked the regular season to end better, but I am proud of how this group has stayed committed to the process and fought hard all season," said head coach Denise Corlett. "We will look to get a couple of weeks to rest and make some noise down at the Pac-12 Championships."

Ivana Vanjak and Catherine Raquel, the No. 2 pair, registered the only win for the Cardinal (5-10 overall, 1-2 Pac-12) against San Jose State (8-11), a 21-18, 21-15 victory. No. 1 Hayley Hodson and Payton Chang fell 21-18, 11-21, 15-13, while No. 3 Merete Lutz and Halland McKenna lost their match 21-13, 21-18.

Alexis Froistad and Tami Alade lost 21-15, 21-9 at No. 5, with Courtney Bowen and Jennifer DiSanto dropping a 16-21, 21-15, 15-9 decision.

Against Santa Clara (9-2), No. 3 Lutz and McKenna got the Cardinal's lone point, a 12-21, 21-16, 17-15 comeback win. No. 1 pair Hodson and Chang won the first set of their match, but fell 15-21, 21-18, 15-13.

No. 2 Vanjak and Raquel lost their match at 21-14, 21-12. No. 4 Bowen and DiSanto fell 21-17, 20-22, 15-13, while No. 5 Alade and Froistad lost 21-12, 21-17.

Stanford returns to action in two weeks at the Pac-12 Conference Championships in Los Angeles, hosted by USC.
