Police arrest East Palo Alto man in connection with brush fire near Facebook in Menlo Park

A 35-year-old East Palo Alto man was arrested Wednesday in connection with a March 28 brush fire in the area of University Avenue east of Adams Drive.

Sergio Anguianolopez was arrested without incident in the area of Purdue and Illinois avenues in East Palo Alto and booked into the San Mateo County jail on suspicion of arson, according to Detective Sgt. Eric Cowans of the Menlo Park Police Department.

The fire, which involved about 13 acres but didn't damage structures or cause injuries, occurred in the Kavanaugh Tract, which is adjacent to Adams Drive and the Menlo Business Park.

Investigators with the Menlo Park Fire Protection District determined that the fire was started at a homeless encampment through some form of human action, according to fire officials.

After interviewing multiple witnesses and collecting evidence, detectives agreed that the fire was started on purpose, Cowans said.

The case is under active investigation by the Menlo Park Police Departments Narcotic Enforcement Team, he said. Police ask that anyone with information regarding this matter to call the Menlo Park Police Department at 650-330-6300 or the anonymous tip line at 650-330-6395.

Was the man purposely trying to burn down Facebook, or did the fire start accidentally? Was it from a cigarette or a campfire?

It was a cold day and the wind was blowing hard from Facebook towards the business park and East Palo Alto. My first thought when I saw where it was burning was that it was a fire for warmth that got away, which may still be the case.
