McKenna helps Stanford wrestlers beat Cal Baptist

Second-ranked Joey McKenna recorded a major decision at 141 pounds and the Stanford wrestling team opened a busy weekend with a 25-10 victory over visiting Cal Baptist in nonconference action Saturday.

The Cardinal (3-2) meets San Francisco State and host Menlo for a pair of duals on Sunday.

After splitting the first four bouts, the Cardinal broke it open thanks to a forfeit at 165 pounds and decision wins from Peter Galli at 174 pounds and Michael Sojka at 197 pounds.

McKenna, fresh off a championship final appearance at the Southern Scuffle, scored several late takedowns against the Lancers' Peter Cunningham to secure his victory. The freshman has won 12 of his 13 bouts on the season.

Redshirt freshman Paul Fox pushed the Cardinal's lead to 7-3 with a 6-1 defeat of Bradford Gerl at 149 pounds, adding to his team-high 21 victories this season. Cal Baptist tied the score at 7-7 in the next weight class heading into Wilson's forfeit victory.

Galli fell behind early and then recorded two escapes to tie the score at 2-2. He recorded a takedown to grab the lead for good. The redshirt junior dominated Smith in the final minutes, slamming him to the mat twice to ensure a 5-2 win.

The next two bouts were defensive struggles, as the four wrestlers earned a combined four points. Zach Nevills lost, 2-0, to Jacob Waste at 184 pounds, but Sojka kept the Lancers out of striking range with a 2-0 win of his own at 197 pounds.

Stanford also wrestled Menlo College yesterday. Nice to see Gunn alumnus Eric Cramer in the mix for Stanford wrestling, posting a victory over his Menlo opponent 9-2.
