Palo Alto Babe Ruth all-stars head to NorCal tourneys

Palo Alto's three Babe Ruth all-star teams entered in this week's NorCal State tournaments should have well-rested pitching staffs as all three squads swept their respective District 6 events on the weekend.

The Palo Alto 13-year-old all-stars posted 4-0 and 9-3 victories over Bel-Mateo in the two-team tourney at McKelvey Field in Mountain View. Next up will be Friday's NorCal opener against Eureka (4 p.m.) at Anton Stadium in Ukiah.

The Palo Alto 14s produced 7-2, 2-0 and 5-3 wins to take their district crown and will play Tri-Valley on Saturday (1 p.m.) in a NorCal State opener at Clark Field in Woodland. In the title game, Palo Alto's Spencer Rojahn tossed six innings of no-hit ball before leaving the game due to reaching his maximum number of innings for the week.

Also opening Saturday will be the Palo Alto 15s, who posted 6-4 and 6-0 wins to capture the district title. Palo Alto will host Oakland at Baylands Athletic Center at 7 p.m.

All three NorCal State tournaments are double-elimination.

Members of the 15-year-old team who played on the 14s last season are being rewarded by playing at home. Last year, the 14s traveled to and from Woodland each day while playing six games in seven days. The team logged approximately 1,400 miles, winding up playing in the championship game that, appropriately, lasted nine innings.
