Palo Alto 15s, 13s win District 6 Babe Ruth baseball titles

The Palo Alto Babe Ruth 15- and 13-year-old all-stars punched their respective tickets to next week's NorCal State tournaments with solid victories to win their District 6 championships on Friday.

The host Palo Alto 15s blanked Mountain View 6-0, at Baylands Athletic Center while the Palo Alto 13s topped Bel-Mateo, 9-3, at McKelvey Field in Mountain View.

The 15s next will host the NorCal State Tournament beginning July 11 while the 13s head to Ukiah on July 10.

The Palo Alto 14s are playing Mountain View for their district title on Saturday.

The Palo Alto 15s didn't have to win the district crown in order to advance -- the NorCal host team has an automatic berth -- but manager Rick Farr's team nonetheless completed its brief sweep in the three-team event.

Palo Alto had David Clarke, Kyle Pruhsmeier and John McGrory combine for a two-hit, 12-strikeout effort. Clarke pitched for Gunn during the spring while Pruhsmeier was a freshman standout at Sequoia.

Aron Ecoff, who pitched Palo Alto past Bel-Mateo on Thursday, had two hits on Friday and scored twice.

Palo Alto's defense was equally as good with no errors in the two seven-inning games.

Ole Erickson's two-run triple in the first inning was all Palo Alto needed to move on. He also scored on an error in the third after Ecoff had driven in a run.

Mountain View had reached the finale with a 5-1 win over Bel-Mateo in Friday's first game. Mountain View and Bel-Mateo each had to play doubleheaders on back-to-back days while Palo Alto had the luxury of playing just twice during the same time.

Mountain View will join Palo Alto in the NorCal State Tournament as will Bel-Mateo, which has been invited to fill out the eight-team bracket.
