Steffens, Fischer lead Team USA to Kunshan Cup title

 

The USA Women's Senior National Team won gold at the Kunshan Cup with an 18-9 water polo win over the Netherlands. It was the second straight victory over the Dutch this week for Team USA who finished the event undefeated at 4-0.

Olympian Maggie Steffens and Mackenzie Fischer, future Stanford teammates, each scored three goals while Ashleigh Johnson recorded 10 saves in net.

Team USA (10-1) prepares for the FINA World League Super Final, which starts Tuesday in Shanghai. An official roster for Team USA at the FINA World League Super Final will be announced prior to opening night.

The high-scoring match saw a host of goals in the first period as the United States took a 5-4 lead after the first eight minutes.

Team USA kept up the offensive onslaught in the second period posting six goals to grab an 11-6 lead at intermission.

Stanford seniors Kiley Neushul and Ashley Grossman each scored twice, as did Sacred Heart Prep grad KK Clark. Cardinal grad Melissa Seidemann also scored for the Americans.

Team USA was 2 of 3 on power plays and converted both of its penalty shots while the Netherlands went 5 of 9 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty.
