East Palo Alto man arrested on suspicion of home burglary

An East Palo Alto man was arrested during a Menlo Park traffic stop for allegedly burglarizing a home and stealing a bottle of wine and truck that he later crashed, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's office.

Julio Moreno Lopez, 26, was arrested March 12, at about 7:30 p.m. after police officers stopped him for a traffic violation, and noticed that the truck he was driving was not registered to him. Officers contacted the truck's owner, who returned home and found that his truck was missing and that his Menlo Oaks Drive home had been ransacked, according to the DA's office.

While searching the truck, officers found a bottle of wine that had been taken from the home inside the vehicle. There was also evidence to suggest that Lopez crashed into a parked car while he backed the truck out of the owner's driveway, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Lopez told police that he did not take the truck, but got it from someone named Frog, Wagstaffe said. Lopez was arrested and charged with home burglary, car theft, possession of stolen property, hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license. He pleaded not guilty Tuesday, March 17, in court and remains in jail on $50,000 bail.
