Cardinal softball opens home season in Nike Invitational

Stanford opens its home softball schedule this weekend at the Nike Invitational as it plays host to No. 3/4 Alabama, Cal Poly and Pacific.

The Cardinal began its 2015 campaign last weekend at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., posting a 4-2 record that included wins against Virginia, Bradley, No. RV/25 Texas and UTEP.

Stanford's offense got off to a hot start, producing 56 hits, 52 runs and 18 extra-base hits en route to batting .339 on the weekend. The Cardinal posted a .564 slugging percentage and .433 on-base percentage.

Lauren Bertoy paced the offense, batting .615 (8-for-13) with nine RBI, three doubles, three walks, a .846 slugging percentage and .706 on-base percentage. She contributed defensively as well, making multiple highlight-worthy plays at second base.

Kayla Bonstrom and Jessica Plaza provided plenty of power, belting two home runs apiece. Bonstrom hit .444 with eight hits and four RIB, while Plaza batted .462 with six hits and four RBI.

Erin Ashby, Victoria Molina, Bessie Noll and Cassandra Roulund also contributed a home run during the weekend.

Hayley Snyder (2-2) and Madi Schreyer (2-0) shouldered a majority of the load in the circle for Stanford. Snyder held a 2.75 ERA with nine strikeouts in 20.1 innings and limited opponents to a .227 batting average. Schreyer accumulated nine strikeouts in 12.2 innings and boasts a 1.66 ERA.

The Cardinal begins Nike Invitational play with a doubleheader Friday at 3 p.m. (PT) against Cal Poly and at 5:30 p.m. against Alabama.

Men's gymnastics

Sophomore Akash Modi was named the College Gymnastics Association National Gymnast of the Week, as announced by the organization Thursday.

Modi finished in the top-four in seven events, scoring 14.800 or higher in each performance at No. 5 Michigan. He earned four first-place finishes, claiming top honors in the all-around (89.850), pommel horse (14.800), rings (14.850) and parallel bars (15.300).

Modi has earned three Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and four CGA National Gymnast of the Week honors this season. He was a four-time MPSF and CGA Gymnast of the Week as a freshman in 2014.

Stanford and Modi will look to keep their momentum going on Friday when it plays host to Arizona State at 7 p.m.
