Former Paly state champs, M-A grad earn volleyball honors

Three former Palo Alto High teammates joined with a former rival to earn women's volleyball honors from the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) this week.

Becca Raffel of Middlebury College, Caroline Martin of Connecticut College and Maddie Kuppe of Tufts College -- all members of two state championship teams at Paly -- earned honors.

Raffel was the NESCAC Co-Rookie of the Year. Despite missing the first month of the season, Raffel ranks eighth in the conference averaging 2.78 kills per set. She wrapped up the year second on the Panther squad with 186 kills and a team-best 2.78 kills per set. She also had 91 digs and 17 blocks.

Martin and Kuppe, meanwhile, received second-team honors. Martin, who was the Rookie of the Year in 2012, earned second-team honors for the third straight season.

Kuppe, who transferred from UConn, helped Tufts reach the NCAA tourney that begins this weekend.

Doherty, a graduate of Menlo-Atherton High, was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year after helping Bowdoin qualify for the NCAA Division II Tournament. The sophomore libero from Menlo Park led the NESCAC with 552 digs and ranks second in digs per set (5.06) and eighth in service aces (45). She also was named to the first team.

Norcal Crew, a local high school rowing program out of Redwood City, had 21 boats competing in The Head of the Lagoon last weekend in Foster City. It was the final big regatta of the fall season for high school rowing on the West Coast.

The Norcal Varsity Men's lightweight 8+ had an amazing row, winning their event by well over a minute, a practically unheard of winning margin, and ended up beating the time of every single boat that raced on Sunday -- across all events.

Four of the eight rowers competed again in the Men's lightweight 4+, also winning that event. The Norcal varsity men's 4+ also placed third out of 17 boats.

In the women's races, Norcal also had a win in the Women's 4x race and a second- and third- place finish in the Women's lightweight 4+. Earlier this fall, the Norcal Women's 4+ finished fourth out of 87 boats at the Head of the Charles Regatta.

Norcal Crew ( comprises high school athletes from Palo Alto, Menlo Park and other schools on the Peninsula.
