Menlo Park: Man killed in officer-involved shooting

A man who allegedly drew a gun during a police pursuit is dead this afternoon after reportedly being shot by a Menlo Park police officer. The shooting happened on Willow Road, near Willow Place, at about 12:50 p.m., according to police.

According to a witness who didn't want to be identified, a woman who works at one of the Willow area businesses alerted police when she saw a man who resembled a burglary suspect pictured on a flier distributed by police in the area.

Officers responded and "found a male suspect involved in a burglary in progress," according to a police statement issued mid-afternoon. "A foot pursuit ensued of the suspect, and a Taser device was deployed to stop the suspect. The ... suspect pulled out a gun and possibly took aim at the officer," the statement said.

Officers shot the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene by medics, police said.

An active police investigation is ongoing, and questions to be answered include whether the still-unidentified suspect fired his weapon. "The suspect's weapon was recovered at the scene," according to the statement. One officer was taken to the hospital with an injury related to the pursuit, it said.

The body remained in the road for some time, and Willow Road was reportedly closed between Middlefield and Creek Drive. News helicopter hovering overhead added to the frantic environment, according to witnesses.

I guess I'm lazy - I've always preferred a guy who can control himself ;-)
