Paly, Menlo, SHP and M-A head into girls CCS tennis playoffs

Four local girls tennis squads will begin the 2014 Central Coast Section Team Tournament on equal footing. After that, all bets are off in one of the more balanced tourneys in recent years.

Sacred Heart Prep (15-6) and Palo Alto (16-4) kick things off in Tuesday's opening round with No. 7 Menlo-Atherton (16-6) and No. 6 Menlo School (16-4) hosting second-round matches on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Menlo coach Bill Shine said the tournament is so competitive this season that his Knights, second last year, could be seeded anywhere from No. 2 to No. 6. He would have been better off No. 6 than No. 5.

Menlo is in the same bracket as No. 4 Mitty (15-5), a possible quarterfinal opponent. In the semifinals, the Knights could face top-seeded Saratoga (20-1).

Had Menlo been seeded No. 6, possible opponents would have been No. 3 St. Francis and No. 2 St. Ignatius. The Lancers handed the Knights one of their four losses this season, which likely kept Menlo from being seeded higher.

Menlo-Atherton, meanwhile, faces a tough task as well with SI a possible quarterfinal opponent and St. Francis waiting in the semifinals at either Bay Club Courtside in Los Gatos or the Los Gatos Racquet and Swim Club. The title match will be held at Courtside on Nov. 19.
