M-A girls open CCS volleyball playoffs as a No. 1 seed

For the second straight year, the Menlo-Atherton girls have received the No. 1 seed for the Central Coast Section Division I volleyball playoffs. The Bears, however, can only hope this season ends better than last.

Menlo-Atherton reached the semifinals in 2013, only to fall to Palo Alto and see its season end -- despite being the top seed. The Vikings went on to lose to Homestead in the title match, with both teams advancing to NorCals.

All three teams are back for the 2014 playoffs, which begin Wednesday. Paly is the No. 6 seed and Homestead the No. 3. Gunn, meanwhile, is No. 8.

Paly and Gunn open at home on Wednesday, as does defending Division IV champ Menlo School. The Knights received the No. 4 seed and will host through the second round. Sacred Heart Prep is back in the Division IV field, but as the No. 7 seed.

In Division V, Pinewood earned the No. 3 seed in a fairly weak division topped by Notre Dame-Salinas (26-6).
