No medals for SHP, M-A or Menlo boys in North-South polo

Sacred Heart Prep, Menlo School and Menlo-Atherton won't be bringing home any medals from the ninth annual North-South Water Polo Challenge that wraps up on Saturday at the SHP and M-A pools.

SHP, which finished third in last year's tournament that brings together some of the best teams in the nation, needs two victories on Saturday to finish fifth. The Gators are the No. 1 seed from Northern California.

Menlo School and Menlo-Atherton, meanwhile, also need a pair of victories on the final day to finish ninth. Should both squads win their third-round matches Saturday morning, they'll meet in the ninth-place game at M-A at 4:10 p.m.

Sacred Heart Prep, meanwhile, will take on NorCal foe Miramonte in the third round on Saturday after dropping a 14-11 second-round game to Laguna Beach. The Gators (15-2) opened the two-day tourney with a 12-8 win over Villa Park.

Michael Swart had five goals against Villa Park while fellow senior Nelson Perla-Ward contributed four. Against Laguna Beach, the No. 1-ranked Division III team in the CIF Southern Section, Jackson Enright paced the Gators with three goals with Swart, freshman Alex Tsotadze and Finn Banks adding two each.

Menlo School (17-3) opened against Laguna Beach and played the No. 5 South seed tough before falling, 8-6. Seniors Nick Bisconti scored three goals Andreas Katsis tallied two for Menlo, the No. 4 North seed. Goalie Spencer Witte had 15 saves.

Menlo bounced back in the second round with a 7-5 win over Villa Park, the No. 8 seed from the South. Katsis had four goals with junior Chris Xi adding two. Witte again was solid with 17 saves.

Harvard-Westlake, regarded as the No. 1 team in the nation, handed host Menlo-Atherton a 20-9 loss in the first round before downing Huntington Beach, 14-2, in the quarterfinals. The Wolverines (20-0) will play in the semifinals on Saturday morning and are favored to face No. 2 Mater Dei in the championship match.
