Stanford men swim to season opening victory

The Stanford men's swimming team opened its season with a convincing 179-106 victory over visiting Hawaii on Saturday.

The Cardinal returns to action on Nov. 5 when California comes to town for a nonconference meet.

"We had great swims from each class, and I was especially happy with our freshmen," Stanford coach Ted Knapp said. "Our team also received great leadership from our team captains."

David Nolan, Daniel Le, Connor Black and Thomas Stephens led the Cardinal to a first place finish to open the meet in the 400 medley relay, swimming a 3:17.52.

The 200-yard freestyle saw Sean Duggan (1:38.62) finish first ahead of teammates Drew Cosgarea (1:38.74) and Jeff Garnier (1:39.78) and Cosgarea came back by going 1:47.87 to win the 200 back.

Christian Brown (55.91) and Daniel Le (55.94) went 1-2 in the 100 breast. Gray Umbach (1:47.63) was the first of four Cardinal on top of the standings in the 200 fly, and Nolan (20.49) pulled off the same trick in the 50 free. Nolan (44.68) added another individual win in the 100 free.
