Gunn girls wrap up SCVAL golf title by downing rival Paly

The Gunn girls had to share the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League regular-season golf title with rival Palo Alto last year. That's won't be the case this season following a season sweep of the Vikings.

With senior Anna Zhou registering four birdies and shooting a 1-under 35, the Titans wrapped up the SCVAL dual-match title with a 200-205 victory over second-place Palo Alto on Thursday at the par-36 Santa Teresa Golf Course in San Jose.

With only two matches remaining next week and holding two wins over Paly, Gunn earned and the championship and will take a 12-0 league mark (13-1 overall) into the final week of the regular season. Paly dropped to 9-2 (10-2) with three matches to play.

Along with the four birdies, Zhou had three bogeys while earning medalist honors. Freshman Lydia Tsai carded a 38, Tiffany Yang and Margaret Redfield shot 42, Lianna McFarlane-Connelly had a 43 and Sabrina Chen shot 44.

Gunn had solid performances up and down the lineup, with each player recording at least one birdie. Four Titans birdied the tough par-4 sixth hole

Palo Alto played without senior No. 1 Michelle Xie, who is at a conference in Florida. Emily Hwang led the Vikings with a 39, Elise Kiya shot 40, freshman Stephanie Yu carded a 41 as did Celia Willner. Candace Wang wrapped up the scoring with a 44.

"We were down by seven after the first group, then our second group came in and we gained four strokes," said Paly coach Doyle Knight. "Then, the last group came in and Gunn's girls were two under us. I was very pleased with the way my girls played. A few mental mistakes here and there.

"In two weeks we have our league tournament, that too will be a good match."

Gunn and Palo Alto will play again at the SCVAL Tournament on Oct. 28, also at Santa Teresa GC.

Nice job! What a close match...5 shots total margin between 6 golfers from each team. That is almost as close as you can get!

Will be interesting to see what happens at CCS and when Paly gets their best player back on the course (did not compete against Gunn due to travel).
