Palo Alto Babe Ruth 14s reach NorCal State tourney finals

 

Getting six singles and four runs in the first inning, the Palo Alto 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars advanced to the championship game of the NorCal State Tournament with a 7-3 win over Woodland on Thursday at Clark Field in Woodland.

Palo Alto will face defending champ Tri-Valley in the finals at 5 p.m., and needs to win twice in order to advance to regional play next week in Surprise, Ariz.


Palo Alto pounded out 12 hits to give the win to starter Shane Wallace, who tossed the first five innings. Chris Cook finished up with two scoreless innings.

After scoring enough runs in the first inning to win the game, Ole Erickson produced an RBI single in the top of the second for a 5-1 lead. A two-run single by David Clarke in the fifth put the game out of reach for Palo Alto.

Erickson finished with two hits and two RBI, Tim Goode added two hits, and Clarke had two RBI. John McGrory contributed a single and two RBI while Bradley Smith added two hits.

At Wilson Park in Vallejo, the Palo Alto 13-year-old all-stars were eliminated by Tri-Valley in the championship game, 10-0.

Palo Alto needed to win twice in order to advance to regional play.

Palo Alto managed just one hit off Tri-Valley's Tyler Coulson, who struck out 12 in the six-inning game, shortened by the 10-run mercy rule. Robert Lopez had the lone hit for Palo Alto, who also had two other baserunners via walks.

Palo Alto hurt its chances by committing seven errors, which led to seven unearned runs for Tri-Valley, which has won six straight NorCal titles at the 13-year-old level.
