USA men fall to 1-2 in FINA World League Super Final

After opening with a victory, the U.S. Men's Senior National Team is headed in the wrong direction following a second straight loss in the FINAL World League Super Final water polo tournament in Dubai, UAE.

The latest seback came Wednesday in a 16-9 loss to Hungary. Stanford's Bret Bonanni scored twice while Cardinal teammates Alex Bowen and Jackson Kimbell each tallied once.

Josh Samuels scored four goals for the Americans, who face Montenegro in the fourth round.

Hungary started the match with two goals before Bowen responded with the first goal for Team USA. Hungary had another scoring opportunity and ended the first quarter, 3-1. During the second quarter, Bonanni and Samuels each got a goal while Hungary established a strong 7-3 lead.

Samuels was the lone scorer for Team USA during the third quarter, which saw Hungary grab a 12-5 advantage. Kimbell got his first goal of the tourney in the fourth quarter.

"Generally we had a good game," said USA head coach Dejan Udovicic. "I am satisfied with the effort and motivation. We made some naive mistakes and turnovers.

"It's normal to go up and down, especially when you play games back to back. Playing at this level each day is good for team development. We will take everything we can from this."
