Stanford WPC boys, girls in JO qualifying tournaments

The Stanford Water Polo Club will be hosting the annual Junior Olympic national tournament this summer at Bay Area pools. That's a given. Just how many Stanford boys and girls qualify will be determined starting this weekend at Pacific Zone tournaments.

Most of the action will be in the East Bay where the Stanford 16U Red and 16U White will be playing at Las Lomas High in Walnut Creek while the 16U Black competes at Diablo Valley College. For the girls, the Stanford 16s will be in the East Bay, the 12s and 14s will compete at West Valley College along with the 18B squad.

This year 28 Pacific Zone boys teams will be attempting to qualify just for the 16U division, with 19 slots available -- seven in the Championship Division, nine in the Classic Division and three in the Invitational Division). Final placement in the qualifying tournament will determine whether a team qualifies and which division teams will play in at Junior Olympics.

Teams that finish outside the top four this weekend will be re-seeded based on their finish and will play again June 28-30 to determine the remaining 15 spots for the Pacific Zone.

The top Stanford 16U Red boys team includes features Finn Banks, Cade Curry, Jackson Enright, Andrew Goodenough, Quinn Hamilton, Kevin Hansen, Andrew Jozefov, Patrick Kirk, Luca Pagano, Thomas Reed, Winston Rosati, Ian Shepherd, Benoit Viollier, Chris Xi and Christian Znidarsic.
