Team USA drops finale of four-game series with Serbia

 

Stanford's Bret Bonanni and Alex Bowen each scored twice for the U.S. Men's Senior National Team as the Americans fell, 16-11, to Serbia on Sunday in the last of four exhibition water polo matches. The game was played in front of a large crowd at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center.

Josh Samuels and Nolan McConnell also netted a pair of goals for Team USA, which heads to Dubai, UAE for the FINA World League Super Final, which begins Monday, June 16 with a preliminary game against Canada.

Stanford's Conner Cleary also scored for the U.S. while American goalies McQuin Baron and Jon Sibley combined for nine saves.

Serbia's Gojko Pijetlovic was in the goal for the whole game and had ten saves.

McConnell and Samuels gave the U.S. a 2-0 lead. Serbia answered with goals by Stefan Mitrovic, Zivko Gocic, and Andija Prlainovic.

The Americans were within 8-7 at halftime before Serbia took control in the second half.

Cleary scored the final goal for Team USA.

Women's team

Stanford's Annika Dries, Ashley Grossman, Kiley Neushul, Melissa Seidemann, Lolo Silver and Maggie Steffens, and Sacred Heart Prep grad KK Clark are all on the roster of the U.S. national women's team that will compete at the FINA World League Super Final.

Competition begins Tuesday in Kunshan, China with the Americans meeting Russia in a preliminary game.

Team USA (6-1) will be playing for the first time since losing to Australia, 7-5, in the finals of the FINA Intercontinental tournament in Riverside on May 25.
