Stanford's Alex Bowen and Bret Bonanni combined for three goals as the USA Men's Senior National Team defeated Brazil, 11-7, and took home the gold medal at the FINA Intercontinental Tournament on Sunday in Shanghai, China.
The victory improved the USA's winning streak to six heading into a four-game exhibition series with Serbia, which concludes at Stanford this Sunday at 3 p.m.
Against Brazil, the U.S. had a balanced scoring attack with seven different players finding the back of the net. Recent Mater Dei High grad McQuin Baron, who stands 6-foot-8, went the distance in the cage and recorded nine saves.
By reaching the medal round of the FINA Intercontinental Tournament, Team USA clinched a berth in the upcoming FINA World League Super Final, set for June 14-21 in Dubai.
Just days after topping Brazil by a single goal, Team USA again had its hands full with the Brazilians, who took a 4-3 lead after the first period.
In the second, the Americans rebounded with three unanswered goals of their own to take a 6-4 lead at halftime. In the third, the teams were even at two goals apiece, leaving Team USA ahead, 8-6, going into the fourth period. In the final eight minutes, Team USA outscored Brazil, 3-1.
Bowen had two goals and Bonanni one for the U.S. The United States went 6-for-13 on power-play opportunities.
Also on the USA team is Jackson Kimbell and Conner Cleary of Stanford plus Menlo School senior Nick Bisconti, who is making his debut with the team.
