Stanford men set for the volleyball season opener

The Stanford men's volleyball team won once in four matches to open its season Friday at the 50th ASICS UC Santa Barbara Tournament.

The Cardinal plays UCLA in the seventh-place match on Saturday. It will mark the first regulation competition of the year.

Stanford opened with a 29-27, 25-20 loss to Harvard, which will be playing in the championship match against Long Beach State.

The Cardinal rebounded against Pacific, 25-22, 25-19, to complete the first session.

Stanford extended both Cal Baptist and the host Gauchos to three sets before losing. The Cardinal fell to cal Baptist, 25-17, 22-25, 15-12, and to UCSB, 25-22, 24-26, 15-8.

"So far, it has been a good tournament for us despite the outcomes," Stanford coach John Kosty said. "We got a lot of guys some good playing time against good competition. Both setters [James Shaw and Joe Ctvrtlik got some good work in for us."

Harvard won Pool A with a 3-1 record and Long Beach State went undefeated in Pool B.
