Team USA reaches FINA quarterfinal in men's polo

Despite losing to Montenegro, 9-4, on the final day of preliminary play Thursday, the United States men's national water polo team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the FINA World League Super Final in Chelyabinsk, Russia.

The U.S. meets China in Friday's quarterfinal.

Alex Obert scored two minutes into the match to give the Americans an early edge. Montenegro responded with two straight to take a 2-1 lead but John Mann answered at the end of the period to tie the score at 2-2 going to the second, and then scored again to give the Americans a 3-2 lead.

Montenegro responded and scored two straight to take a 4-3 advantage before Stanford grad Janson Wigo scored to even things again.

Montenegro scored the final five goals of the contest, limiting the U.S. to 1 of 9 on the power play.
