Macy's security guard bitten by alleged shoplifter

Police seek additional persons in connection with the incident

A man being stopped by a Macy's Men's Store security guard bit the guard down to the bone on Thursday, July 12, Palo Alto fire officials said.

Three men who were suspected of shoplifting clothing at the Stanford Shopping Center store were followed outside the building shortly before 1:36 p.m. Security personnel attempted to stop the shoplifters, but two ran off.

When security guards attempted to subdue the third man, a scuffle ensued, Palo Alto fire Battalion Chief Doug Conn said. One of the guards was bitten to the bone during the altercation. The victim was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

Palo Alto police responding to a call for assistance arrested Adrian Urena, 20, of San Mateo. He has been charged with robbery.

Police are still seeking the other two men and the case is still under investigation. No descriptions of the individuals have been released.

Shame the shoplifters weren't tight lipped too!

Hope the security guard is doing OK.

I hope that the police apprehend these thugs. I just wish that there was some way that society didn't have to pay to house these animals.

This is an organized team that scatter when security moves to arrest. Why was security not carrying mace to blind the suspect while they put him on handcuffs? When suspect began to resist arrest, they were within legal right to mace the shoplifter. I've worked as a uniformed security before. When I tried to arrest and he fought back, I got the situation under control when I maced him. Course, after restraining him, I had to get him under running water to get the mace off his eyes because I was told it can cause permanent blindness if suspect is not treated immediately.
