Senior Ryan Thacher won at No. 1 singles to give Stanford a 4-3 victory over host No. 23 Tulsa on Friday in the season opener for the Cardinal men’s tennis team.

The Hurricane lost to California, 4-3, on Thursday.

With top player Bradley Klahn out with an ankle injury, the sixth-ranked Cardinal used wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No.5 singles to set up Thacher’s match clinching win.

Thacher played at the top of the ladder for the first time since 2010. He rallied for a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Japie De Klerk.

Matt Kandath recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 2 position, while freshmen John Morrissey and Robert Stineman were victorious in their dual match debuts.

Stanford meets No. 20 North Carolina at Tulsa on Saturday.

Wrestling

Sophomore Garrett Schaner recorded a pin in the first bout of the night and No. 20 Stanford went on to beat host San Francisco State, 25-12, in a nonconference match on Friday.

The Cardinal (7-5) hosts Southern Oregon at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Cardinal extended its lead to 9-0 as redshirt sophomore Bret Baumbach recorded a 2-0 decision over SFSU’s Isaiah Jimenez, ranked No. 8 in the nation in the Division II polls.

Junior Spence Patrick added to the Stanford lead with an 11-3 major decision over Zach Jimenez at 184 pounds. Sophomore Alan Yen increased the lead to 16-3 with a 10-4 decision over Thomas Martin at 197 pounds.

Sophomore heavyweight Dan Scherer registered a 5-0 decision over Anthony Gonzalez to improve 17-8 overall and 10-2 in duals.

Junior Ryan Mango, ranked eighth in the nation at 133 pounds, posted a 3-0 decision over Julian Perez. After two scoreless periods, Mango scored a takedown in the third period and secured 3:25 of riding time for the victory. He leads the team with 21 wins this season and remains undefeated in duals at 12-0.

True freshman Alex Manley earned his second win of the season and his first in a dual with a 4-2 decision over Daniel Flores at 141 pounds.

Men’s volleyball

Brad Lawson recorded 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .333 but Stanford fell to host UCLA, 25-23, 25-22, 25-17, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Friday.

The fourth-ranked Cardinal (1-1, 3-1) travels to UC Santa Barbara for a match Saturday night as a 10-match, 40-day road trip gets underway.

Stanford plays 11 of its final 13 matches at home.
