Local agencies drop prices for pet adoptions

Goal is to find homes for 1,000 animals by New Year's Eve

Six Silicon Valley animal rescue agencies, including Palo Alto Animal Services, are offering discounted pet adoptions in a bid to find homes for 1,000 animals by New Year's Eve.

Prospective pet owners this month can adopt animals for $10 at Palo Alto Animal Services, the Santa Clara County Animal Shelter, Humane Society Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority, San Jose Animal Care and Services and Town Cats Rescue.

The $10 adoption price tag offered at these shelters this month is down drastically from the usual adoption rates that range from $90 to $120, according to a statement from the Santa Clara County Animal Shelter.

Those who adopt a pet at a participating shelter this month will also receive a range of regular adoption services including a spay/neuter surgery, microchip implant and registration, vaccinations, flea and worm

treatment and a 4-pound bag of pet food.

For more information about adopting through Palo Alto Animal Services, including YouTube videos of available animals, visit the agency's website.

As of Friday (Dec. 9) there were more than 70 dogs and 50 cats at the Santa Clara Animal Shelter waiting to be adopted. Photos and information about the animals available for adoption can be found at

I heard from a nice couple who just adopted 2 lovely kittens from PAAS that the $10 adoption price doesn't apply to kittens. I could be wrong, but check if it makes a difference to you. Meanwhile we have a wonderful group of adult cats ($10 each). Gulliver is a sweet black with white toes, whiskers, and a trim white moustache. He gets along well with other cats and especially enjoys playing with Jello, a young black/white female (no moustache). I volunteer at PA Animal Services, entertaining cats once a week. We also have a pair (two-for-one bargain) Junot and Hero, attractive, calm, gentlemen you can adopt. All our cats are sweethearts. --Scottie
