• Talk: 'Iran, Al Qaeda & the U.S. Campaign Against Terrorism'

Eric P. Schmitt, senior writer and Washington correspondent with the New York Times, will give a free talk at 6:30 p.m. today (Dec. 5) titled "Iran, Al Qaeda & the U.S. Campaign Against Terrorism." The event will be in Pigott Hall, Building 260, Room 113, Stanford University, as part of the Iranian Studies Lecture Series on campus. Schmitt, 51, has covered military and national-security affairs for the Times for 20 years. Go to ica.stanford.edu.

• Art: 'Winter Solstice'

A new group exhibition by various artists working in wood and textiles, mixed media, paint, photography and other media is up at The Gallery at Fibre Arts Design, 935 Industrial Ave., Palo Alto.
