• Talk: 'Chasing Super Bugs with Smarter Drug Design'

In a lecture at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Clyde Smith of SLAC will speak on powerful and ever-evolving diseases, and the ways in which SLAC is using X-rays to analyze and combat them. The free talk is tonight (Nov. 29) at 7:30 p.m. in Panofsky Auditorium, 2575 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park. Public lectures are planned at SLAC every other month. • Art: 'Seeing Red'

Scarlet, auburn, vermilion and fire-engine may be some of the shades spotted this fall at Gallery 9 at 143 Main St. in Los Altos. The gallery is hosting "Seeing Red," a show of sculptures, paintings, jewelry, metalwork, prints, ceramics, mixed-media pieces and other works of art by various artists through Dec. 24. Admission is free, and the gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4. Go to gallery9losaltos.com.
