Clothes dryer causes Palo Alto house fire

Residents not injured in minor blaze

A malfunctioning clothes dryer caused a home fire on Moreno Avenue on Friday afternoon, according to the Palo Alto Fire Department.

The fire was reported at 4:37 p.m. at 920 Moreno Ave. and occurred in a stacked washer/dryer unit. The fire scorched a wall and caused smoke damage, but no one was injured, Capt. Doug Conn said. No estimate has been placed on the damage to the home but about $1,000 damage was done to the washer/dryer, Conn said.

The dryer vent duct is likely clogged.

Use a rotary dryer vent cleaner (attaches to cordless drill) or hire a pro. You need to clear out the entire length to avoid fire hazard.

Finally, use the clothesline on sunny days and the lint won't build up as fast.

The typical cause is flexible dryer duct. Most building codes prohibit it now. The ridges catch lint, builds up, clogs and starts on fire. Use smooth metal duct where possible.
