Paly's Kuppe is outstanding senior on all-league team

The Palo Alto girls' volleyball team will head into the 2011 Central Coast Section Division I championship match this weekend with the Most Outstanding Senior in the SCVAL De Anza Division and two other first-team selections.

Paly senior Maddie Kuppe, who has helped the Vikings compile a 32-3 record this season, was named the Most Outstanding Senior. The Vikings went 12-0 while capturing their sixth straight division title.

Senior teammates Melanie Wade and Kimmy Whitson joined Kuppe on the all-league first team, but it was Stanford-bound Brittany Howard of Mountain View who received the top honor as the division's Most Valuable Player.

"There was a tremendous amount of discussions this year regarding league MVP, since we had so many quality nominations," said Paly coach Dave Winn. "Ultimately, it came down to a decision between Brittany Howard, Maddie Kuppe, Melanie Wade and Kimmy Whitson. Brittany was chosen due to her outstanding individual performances in many of her league matches in which she almost single-handedly carried her team to victory."

Howard helped Mountain View go 7-5. Peter Kim of Los Altos, who coached the Eagles to a 6-6 mark, was named Coach of the Year over Winn and two other coaches with better records.

Paly seniors Caroline Martin and Jackie Koenig were named to the second team while senior Ashley Shin and junior Shelby Knowles were honorable mention.

Gunn, which struggled to a 1-11 division mark, was represented by senior Julia Maggioncalda and junior Lena Latour on the second team and Julia Li on honorable mention.
