Big rig overturns on 101 in Menlo Park

Truck driver was not injured

Southbound lanes on U.S. Highway 101 reopened in Menlo Park Sunday morning after an overturned big rig blocked both directions of traffic for more than six hours, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The driver of the north-bound big-rig truck likely fell asleep at the wheel at about 2:20 a.m., causing the truck to veer to the right and strike a concrete barrier on the side of the roadway, CHP Officer Art Montiel said.

The driver then steered the truck to the left and lost control, crashing through a center divide north of Willow Road, Montiel said.

The truck overturned on its side, sliding north for about 100 yards. The cab of the truck came to rest on the southbound side and the trailer on top of the center divide.

The truck driver and his son were not injured, and no other vehicle is believed to be involved in the crash, Montiel said.

Northbound lanes were cleared at about 8:20 a.m.

Southbound lanes were reopened at 9:15 a.m., Montiel said.

The collision remains under investigation. Anyone who might have witnessed it is asked to contact CHP Officer Rathe at 650-369-6261.

I hope that Caltrans bills the truck driver or his employers for the cost of cleaning up and repairing the highway.

I'm glad he did not crash into any other cars on the road.

Thank goodness the driver and his son were not injured!! Truck driving is a hard job and often there are financial incentives to drive and forgo sleep. I feel fortunate that I don't have to do that to support my family. Thank goodness no one was injured!! That is such a blessing.
