This weekend's events (Nov. 5-6)

• Art: New gallery

The new Esther Baran Art Gallery opens its doors at Menlo Park's Allied Arts Guild at 75 Arbor Road on Saturday (Nov. 5) at 10 a.m. Baran's etchings, jewelry and artwork are often inspired by the fairy stories she read as a child. Animals often play leading roles in these visual tales. Go to alliedartsguild.org.

• Film: 'The Concert'

As part of the Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival, the film "The Concert" will be shown at 8 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 5) at the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center, 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto. The 2009 French movie follows conductor Andrei Filipov, who refused an order to fire his Jewish orchestra musicians and instead schemed to get his band a gig in Paris. A discussion on the experiences of Jewish musicians in the Soviet Union will follow. Tickets are $9.50 to $10.98. Go to svjff.org.

• Community: Diwali celebration

A free public celebration of Diwali, the Indian festival of lights, is planned from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 6) at Stanford University's Old Union. The event will include religious rituals, sweets and dancing, and is organized by the Graduate Student Council, Hindu Students Council at Stanford and ASSU Undergraduate Senate.
