M-A's Fang finishes second at PAL girls' golf tournament

Menlo-Atherton junior Xin Fang finished second at the Peninsula Athletic League Individual Championships at Poplar Creek Golf Course in San Mateo on Tuesday.

Fang, the two-time defending PAL champion, shot a 77, three strokes better than her winning mark of a year ago, and finished a stroke behind Aragon freshman Kelly Fang (no relation).

Xin Fang qualified for the Central Coast Section tournament as an individual and will play next Tuesday at the Rancho Canada Golf Course in Carmel Valley.

Bears' freshman Ashley Utz finished seventh in the PAL tournament with a 94, four strokes shy of qualifying for the CCS tournament.

Fang shot a 41 over the front nine and rallied to draw even by the 14th hole before a bogey on the 15th hole pushed her back a stroke.

"It's the worst I shot on the front nine," she said. "I didn't shoot the score I expected."

While Fang, who practices at Palo Alto Muni, was disappointed at her result, her main goal was to qualify for the CCS tournament.

"I knew I could make 90 and I didn't care if I won or not just as long as I qualified," she said.

Fang finished strong, including hitting a ball out of the sand trap on the 18th hole that landed inches from the cup and resulted in par.

"I saw a few bunkers today," said Fang.

Fang has played the Carmel course a few times but said she wasn't as focused as she should have been last year and played poorly. Her goal is to shoot even-par there next week.

Fang took up golf about five years ago and started playing competitively a year later. She enjoyed her best year over the past summer, taking home three first-place trophies and finishing among the top 10 in several others.
