• Panel: 'An Interdisciplinary Tour of the Human Condition'

Free-flowing, wide-ranging conversation is expected at a free 7 p.m. forum tomorrow (Oct. 20) at Stanford's Cubberley Auditorium, looking at the human condition from artistic, scientific and other perspectives. Author Piero Scaruffi will moderate the Stanford Continuing Studies panel, whose members are: Stanford theoretical physics professor Leonard Susskind, Stanford associate professor of art Gail Wight, composer and media artist Pamela Z, and San Jose State University professor Jan English-Lueck. Novelist Amitav Ghosh gives an author talk tomorrow (Oct. 20) at 7 p.m. on his book "River of Smoke," about a ship struggling against a Bay of Bengal cyclone and its passengers. The 33rd Annual Palo Alto Weekly Short Story Contest is now accepting entries for Adult, Young Adult (15-17) and Teen (12-14) categories. Send us your short story (2,500 words or less) and entry form by March 29. First, Second and Third Place prizes awarded in each category.
