• Music: Sphinx Virtuosi/Catalyst Quartet

Stanford Lively Arts opens its season tonight (Oct. 19) with an 8 p.m. performance by the Sphinx Virtuosi chamber orchestra and the Catalyst Quartet in Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The musicians are contest winners from the Detroit-based Sphinx Organization, which seeks to involve more African Americans and Latinos in classical music. Their program includes Mozart's Divertimento in D Major for String Ensemble, K136 (1772). Tickets are $26 general, $21 for non-Stanford students, $13 for youths under 18, and free for Stanford students. Go to livelyarts.stanford.edu.

• Lecture: Jim Lehrer

Author and former news anchor of PBS' "NewsHour" Jim Lehrer is scheduled to speak tonight (Oct. 19) at 7 p.m. in the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Lehrer will speak on his book "Tension City: Inside the Presidential Debates, from Kennedy-Nixon to Obama-McCain," in conversation with emeritus Stanford University history professor David Kennedy. Admission is $20 general and $15 for Commonwealth Club members, with premium seating $45/$35. Students pay $10. Go to commonwealthclub.org.
