Stanford women clinch NorPac title with 3-2 win at Cal


Emily Henriksson scored the go-ahead goal late in the contest and the Stanford women's field hockey team edged host California, 3-2, Sunday to clinch the NorPac West Division title and the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.

Becky Dru and Colleen Ryan also scored for the ninth-ranked Cardinal (12-2, 5-0), which hosts the NorPac Championships beginning Nov. 3.

Stanford downed No. 12 California for the ninth time in their past 12 meetings.

Men's soccer

Garrett Gunther scored twice and Stanford snapped a four-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over visiting Oregon State on Sunday in a Pac-12 Conference contest.

Stanford (4-7-2, 1-3-1) opens the second half of conference play at Washington on Friday night.

Alexander Binnie also scored for the Cardinal, which took a 3-0 lead early in the first half and then held on for the victory after the Beavers rallied with two quick back-to-back goals also in the first half.

"I was really pleased to see us score some quality goals in the run of play," Stanford coach Bret Simon said. "We were focused on being more attack-minded."

Gunther also recorded an assist while Jason Dodson made four saves.


Stanford finished third at the Navy Coed Regatta, sixth at the Captain Hurst Intersectional and with its JV team, and seventh at the Stoney Burke Intersectional to complete a busy weekend.

At Navy, Stanford remained in third place for the second day of sailing with Kevin Laube skippering Jack Ortel and Kelly Ortel to 94 points and the second-best score in the B Division.

Mateo Vargas, in one of two singlehanded divisions over the 18 races was second as well, finishing with 97 points.

Freshman Kieran Chung-Wolf was third in the D division in the other singlehanded division amongst the 18 teams with 84 points as the four Cardinal divisions combined for 466 points.
