Fit as 49ers

Several San Francisco 49ers football players promoted physical fitness among youth Monday afternoon by helping to finish construction on a fitness center at the 49ers Academy, a public middle school in East Palo Alto.

The outdoor center features various weightlifting machines, including chest presses, incline sit-up benches and leg presses. Up to 28 students can work out at the same time, according to the school.

The fitness center is mechanical and uses the person's own weight as part of the workout. It requires no electricity or scheduled maintenance.

Forty-Niner tight end Vernon Davis, safety Donte Whitner, cornerback Carlos Rogers, safety Reggie Smith and cornerback Chris Culliver met with students and demonstrated the machines.

The San Francisco 49ers Academy was established through a partnership with Communities in Schools, a nonprofit agency, in 1996.
