Stanford's Burdette, Gibbs gain a doubles victory


Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs salvaged an otherwise dismal day for the Stanford men's and women's tennis programs at the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday.

Burdette and Gibbs beat a team from Baylor, 9-7, to reach the second round of the doubles tournament in Pacific Palisades.

Burdette and Gibbs each lost their singles matches. Burdette fell to Alabama's Mary Anne Macfarlane, 6-3, 6-4, while Gibbs dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision to Duke's Beatrice Capra.

Stanford junior Stacey Tan, the NCAA national runner-up last spring, lost to UCLA's Robin Anderson, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.

At the men's tournament in Tulsa, Ryan Thacher fell, 6-3, 6-4, to Tennessee's Marcel Thiemann in the first round of the main draw, and then lost to Mississippi State's George Coupland, 6-3, 6-4, in the consolation bracket.
