Busy weekend at Stanford, topped by soccer showdown

It will be another busy weekend at Stanford University with men's water polo, women's soccer, men's soccer and football highlighting the schedule. This means crowds and parking problems.

The women's soccer team faces a big weekend, with USC and No. 3 UCLA arriving at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

Tickets are expected to go swiftly for Sunday's match against UCLA. According to Soccer America's rankings, the match will pit the top two teams in the nation, with No. 1 Stanford taking on the No. 2 Bruins at 1 p.m.

Cagan Stadium, capacity 1,900, is expected to sell out in advance. Those interested in tickets can purchase them three ways: online at, by phone at 800-STANFORD or at the ticket office, open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and located at Gate 2 at Stanford Stadium.

The Stanford-UCLA match may serve as the de facto Pac-12 championship and could determine the No. 1 seed for the NCAA tournament.

On Friday, Stanford plays host to USC at 7 p.m., which will give Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe his first chance at earning his 200th career coaching victory. At the same time, the Stanford men's water polo team will host Pepperdine in Avery Aquatic Center.

There will be parking limitations Friday because the normal soccer parking area, Lot 2, will be used for football RV parking and unavailable for soccer. Parking will remain open at the Varsity Lot, the paved lot between Sunken Diamond, Cagan Stadium, and Stanford Stadium.

In addition, parking will be available at Masters Grove. The entrance to the parking area can be reached from the right southbound lane on El Camino Real.

Friday's soccer match also is Dads and Daughters Night. Dads pay general admission adult ticket price and receive a daughter's general admission youth ticket for $1 each. There is a limit of daughters per household.

Sunday's soccer match is Breast Cancer Awareness Day. Wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness and receive $2 off general admission adult/youth/senior/faculty tickets. The promotion is available on game day at the Cagan Ticket Office.

There also is a "Football y Futbol" deal, which will allow the buyer to get $2 off general admission adult/youth/senior/faculty soccer tickets by presenting a football ticket from Saturday's 4:30 p.m. game against Colorado.

Following Sunday's match, there will be an autograph day for the entire women's soccer team.

Fans are welcome to stay at Cagan for the Stanford men's soccer match against rival California, which begins at 6 p.m. However, the match will require an additional ticket purchase. Each match requires its own separate purchase.

The Stanford men's water polo team also will be busy Sunday, hosting UC Santa Barbara at noon.
