Williams, Wopat earn Pac-12 Conference honors

An impressive two-match sweep by the Stanford women's volleyball team last weekend helped earn Cardinal sophomores Rachel Williams and Carly Wopat weekly honors from the Pac-12 Conference on Monday.

Williams was named as the Bank of the West Offensive Player of the Week while Wopat earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, announced by Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott.

An outside hitter from Los Gatos, Williams led the Cardinal offense in wins over four-time defending national champion and No. 2 Penn State, and No. 7 Florida to capture the team's second-straight Nike Volleyball Big Four Classic title.

She averaged 5.00 kills, 2.89 digs, 0.67 blocks and 5.39 points per set over the two matches. Against the Nittany Lions, Williams registered her second career double-double with 22 kills and 12 digs on a .302 attack percentage.

In a five-set thriller against the Gators, she led the team with 23 kills and 14 digs for another double-double, and also collected a career-high four blocks. Williams was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, her second-consecutive week earning that honor.

Wopat, a middle blocker, anchored the Stanford defense while earning all-tournament honors. Her efforts helped the team post its second-straight undefeated nonconference season (6-0), averaging 1.44 blocks and 1.56 digs to go with 2.67 kills and 3.56 points per set in the two matches.

In the Penn State match, the Santa Barbara native tallied a team-high seven blocks, eight digs and 11 kills. Against Florida in the tournament championship, she recorded six blocks, six digs and put down 13 kills.

It is the first-career Pac-12 weekly recognition for both Williams and Wopat, and Stanford's 77th all-time. Oregon State's Arica Nassar was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.

The second-ranked Cardinal opens the Pac-12 Conference slate on Tuesday at top-ranked California at 7 p.m.
