■ Art: 'Foot Notes'

Los Altos painter Nancy Calhoun opens a new free exhibition today (Sept. 6) in which she uses different surfaces for her abstract and traditional watercolors: clayboard, the synthetic paper Yupo, canvas and traditional paper. Her show runs through Oct. 1 at Viewpoints Gallery, 315 State St., Los Altos. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call 650-941-5789 or go to viewpointsgallery.com.

■ Talk: 'Obama's Economy'

Jack Rasmus, an author and political economist at Santa Clara University, gives a free talk tonight (Sept. 6) at 7 p.m. at the Media Center, 900 San Antonio Road, Palo Alto. He'll discuss the "still-faltering economic 'recovery'" and present ideas on what he believes President Obama should be doing. The event is presented by the Peninsula Peace and Justice Center.
