Harbin scores in overtime to lift women's field hockey past host Hofstra

 

Kelsey Harbin scored 3:29 in overtime to lift the No. 20 Stanford field hockey team to a 4-3 victory over host Hofstra in a nonconference match on Saturday.

Becky Dru scored three goals for the Cardinal in its season opener.

The Cardinal jumped out to 2-0 lead on goals off penalty corners by Dru, including her first 36 seconds into the contest from senior Stephanie Byrne and sophomore Hope Burke. Dru's second, also off a penalty corner, came at the 19:05 mark off assists from Byrne and sophomore Colleen Ryan.

In overtime, Alex McCawley's shot was blocked but Harbin picked up the rebound and put it into the back of the net to give Stanford the victory.

The Cardinal outshot the Pride, 24-10, and had 13 penalty corners to Hofstra's five. Stanford goalie Ale Moss made three saves to post the victory.

Stanford is scheduled to play at No. 4 Connecticut Monday.

Women's volleyball

Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Williams recorded a career high 13 kills to help sixth-ranked Stanford beat NCAA tournament participant Delaware, 25-15, 25-22, 25-21, Saturday, in its season opener at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas.

Sophomore middle blocker Carly Wopat had a career high nine blocks and eight digs. Junior setter Karissa Cook accumulated 32 assists and nine digs and junior libero Hannah Benjamin finished with a team-high 11 digs.

Stanford meets host Rice on Sunday.

Men's soccer

Stanford dropped its season opener, 1-0, to host Santa Clara on Saturday.

The Cardinal outshot the Broncos, 9-7, including a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.

Stanford travels to Maryland for a nonconference match on Friday.
