Tonight (Aug. 25) at 7 p.m., Kathleen Baty gives a talk on her book "College Safety 101: Miss Independent's Guide to Empowerment, Confidence, and Staying Safe." The event is at Kepler's Books, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park. Audience members must buy a copy of the book or a $10 gift certificate to admit two (Kepler's members get in free). ■ Movies: 'Mary Poppins'

A free outdoor showing of the 1964 Julie Andrews classic film "Mary Poppins" is scheduled for tonight (Aug. 25) at sundown (around 8 p.m.) at Courthouse Square in downtown Redwood City. Some chairs and tables are available, but audience members often bring blankets and picnic dinners. The showing is part of the city's summer series; weekly screenings are scheduled through Oct. 6.
