Man shot, killed while driving in Menlo Park

Police investigate Thursday evening homicide

A man shot and killed in Menlo Park Thursday evening (Aug. 18) has been identified by the San Mateo County coroner's office as Carl Earl Purvis Jr.

Purvis, a 19-year-old Stockton resident, was shot around 6 p.m. when a caller reported shots being fired from one vehicle into another at the corner of Newbridge Street and Almanor Avenue, police said.

Officers arriving at the scene found only broken glass, but a short time later found a dark blue Pontiac up on a curb in the 500 block of Pierce Road. Purvis was found inside the car with a gunshot wound to the torso, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene, police said.

The suspect vehicle is described as an older American model red vehicle with large rims and a spoiler. It is thought to have fled south on Newbridge Street after the shooting, according to police. A description of a suspect or suspects was not available as of Friday morning.

The homicide remains under investigation. Anyone with information regarding the case should call 650-330-6300 or the anonymous tip line at 650-330-6395.
