Stacey Tan and Nicole Gibbs will not be joining former Stanford teammate Hilary Barte in the main draw of the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center as both dropped matches in straight sets during Sunday's qualifying tournament.
Six of the eight seeded players in the qualifying draw advanced to Monday's competition, with top-seeded Marina Erakovic leading the way with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory over Shuko Aoyama.
Barte, ranked 959th in the world, meets 147th-ranked Kai-Chen Chang in Monday's evening session, following the feature match between Dominika Cibulkova and Kimiko Date-Krumm at 7 p.m.
Barte won three matches during a qualifying tournament last week in Lexington, KY. Barte reached the main draw, where she lost in the first round.
Chang last played at Wimbledon, where she earned a spot in the main draw by winning three matches.
Elsewhere at Stanford, No. 2 Urszula Radwanska, No. 3 Olga Savchuk and No. 8 Sharon Fichman remain in contention for a spot in the main draw.
No. 7 Rika Fujiwara outlasted Sheng-Nan Sun 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 while No. 5 Ajla Tomljanovic escaped with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 triumph over Gibbs, who had reached the second round of qualifying for the second straight year.
Tan was also looking to pull another upset, but dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Marie-Eve Pelletier. Tan upended No. 6 Heidi El Tabakh on Saturday to reach the second round.
The only upset of the day featured Abigail Spears knocking off No. 4 Alexa Glatch, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
