Another busy weekend for local water polo teams

It will be another busy weekend for water polo at both ends of California with the Women's US Open of Water Polo set for Moraga and the High School Championships held in Orange County.

The women's tournament, which replaces the old Senior Nationals, gets under way Friday with Stanford taking on New York Athletic Club (NYAC) at Miramonte High at 8 a.m.

Stanford also will play SC Valley at Miramonte at 2 p.m. to wrap up the opening day. On Saturday, pool play continues with Stanford facing Saddleback El Toro (SET) at Acalanes High at 10 a.m.

Quarterfinals continue Saturday at Acalanes and Miramonte highs, with the championship match scheduled for Sunday at Acalanes High at 3:30 p.m.

Stanford's roster includes Kate Baldoni, Kimberly Benedetti, Cassie Churnside, Monica Coughlan, Kaley Dodson, Jillian Garton, Victoria Kennedy, Alexis Lee, Alyssa Lo, Kaitlyn Lo, Pallavi Menon, Lizzie Peiros, Kelsey Suggs and Cassie Wyckoff. The team is coached by Susan Ortwein.

Most of the players competed on the Stanford women's team that captured the 2011 NCAA title this past spring.

Also starting Friday is the High School Championships at Capo Valley, El Toro, Newport Harbor and Santa Margarita highs.

Palo Alto will join Menlo School, Menlo-Atherton, Sacred Heart Prep and St. Francis as the only teams from the Central Coast Section. Each team will play two matches per day over the three-day tournament.
