■ Film: 'Raise the Castle'

The 2005 Japanese film "Raise the Castle," billed as a cross between Kurosawa and Monty Python, will have a free screening tonight (July 14) at 7 p.m. Part of the summer film festival held by Stanford University's Division of International Comparative and Area Studies, the screening will be in Building 200, Room 002. ■ Community: 'Wagging Tails and Wine Tasting'

As a benefit for the Humane Society of Silicon Valley, the Garden Court Hotel at 520 Cowper St. in Palo Alto will host "Wagging Tails and Wine Tasting" tonight (July 14) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Held in the open-air courtyard patio, the pet-friendly (on leashes) event features wine-tasting from Mutt Lynch Winery in Sonoma County, and information about dog training and pet photography. A suggested donation of $15 will go to the humane society. Go to gardencourt.com.

The 33rd Annual Palo Alto Weekly Short Story Contest is now accepting entries for Adult, Young Adult (15-17) and Teen (12-14) categories. Send us your short story (2,500 words or less) and entry form by March 29. First, Second and Third Place prizes awarded in each category.
